Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, Hope you all enjoyed the green and now it’s time to get fired up about ‘I Love Trivia’. It’s Trivia 42 and how can you not want to get into it. It has been a long, long winter and now, well, come on, let’s get in Trivia mode. Just an update on my tulips, they actually are starting to break ground. I’m so happy. I bet you really want to hear about my flowers. There is so much to say, but most of it is me rambling so I’ll try to make it short. It’s been a great year, the questions are done, just the read through sessions to come. What a great thing, this Trivia Contest is! It’s such a great experience with friends and new acquaintances all joining together to experience the phenomenon that is Trivia. So, buck up and get ready to play!

Trivia 42: I Love Trivia! Let’s face it, don’t you just love it? This past weekend was an I Love Lucy marathon on Hallmark Channel and I didn’t get much time to watch it, because of writing and finishing the New Trivia Times. But, not to worry, there are 4 episodes on every morning at 5 am. Of course! I’m up then! What do you think, I sleep a lot?

The Trivia Kickoff movie will be shown Friday and Saturday April 1 and 2. There will be midnight shows both nights and a 10:30 showing on Saturday morning. The shows will be on the Rogers Mega-Screen at the Rogers Cinema on Church Street in Stevens Point. Admission is still $3:00 at the door. The movie will be announced when it opens on the screen. It is rated all ages and, I hope, will truly be an experience. Be ready to laugh. The Trivia Kickoff Movie, don’t miss seeing this movie on the big screen. See you there…

SPTV will be broadcasting the contest again. It will only be available in Stevens Point. Sorry about that. So, a big salute to SPTV and a great staff this year.

As in the past, I have been working with the Portage County AODA. This is a good idea and most of you should know all these things, just a reminder.

GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS OF STUDENTS DURING TRIVIA WEEK-END

IF HOSTING A PARTY….

EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO BE SAFE— Children, Youth, Teens, Students, Adults

·         Set ground rules with own children and let parents of other children coming know what they are. ( a sheet of written rules and consequences helps all remember.)

·         Understand local and state laws and consequences about curfew, and use of alcohol and other drugs by underage youth.

·         Have plenty of food and non-alcoholic beverages available.

·         Ask parents of students coming to your home to help with food and supervision.

·         Arrange for one or more responsible adults to be awake and aware at all times.

DURING THE PARTY:

·         Avoid easy access to alcohol for anyone under 21 years of age

·         Notify any parent whose child arrives under the influence of alcohol or any other drug to come and pick them up.  If parents are not available call the police.

·         IF a teen arrives at the party with alcohol or other drugs, confiscate, and call parents or police for assistance.

If YOUR TEEN IS ATTENDING A PARTY:

Youth need boundaries and clear expectations with consequences. Although they may hassle you about them, the option of attending a party with boundaries or not attending any party will help them make the right choice.

Each question in the contest might run for two songs, except singing questions which run for three songs, and the final question which will run for one song. Each team is limited to one call per question. Each question is worth 2000 points divided by three plus the number of teams answering it correctly, rounded up to the next value divisible by 5, maximum of 500 points per team per question. Just before the top 5 or 10 teams are read at the end of the newscast, we will announce the point values of the previous hour's questions. Of course there will still be the two running questions. We ask that teams do not collaborate with other teams and that the contest be treated as what it is, a game. Scores will be kept up to date about every two hours on the internet at the trivia web site, www.90fmtrivia.org and every four hours on cable access television. After the contest begins, we will give out the Trivia Complaint line phone number. It is to be used for legitimate complaints concerning the validity of an answer. If your score does not match ours, ours is right. Please feel free to tape record and playback any part of the contest, in fact, you should use tape recorders because we will not repeat questions on the complaint line. However, no part of the contest may be broadcast or reproduced without the permission of 90FM and the OZ, including the pictures in the New Trivia Times. The pictures in the New Trivia Times may not be posted on the internet. Questions may not be reprinted for distribution.

Again, the New Trivia Times team really kicked it in the butt this year. Thanks to Paul Komasa, Chris Wiza, Eric Hamus, Jennifer Brilowski, Mary Stroik, Ann Van Lysal and Wayne Semmerling. And thanks to the many businesses in the area who have stuck by us, even in this down turn time in the economy.

I’m sure you are wondering, is Oz ready, the contest is awfully early this year and can he and John do it in time? Well, bring it on. I’m just looking forward to the absolutely carefree week and weekend known as Trivia. It’s just so much fun for us, we sit in the office listening to the questions being asked on the air, laughing about the questions and wondering if anyone gets even close to figuring out how to spell some of the names we use, and just knowing that you are calling us names and, all in all, having a great
time. That is what it is all about, having fun. John and I are limbered up, we’re ready to go into the ring and go for the 54 hours of non-stop action that is known as Trivia. From the kickoff movie, to the lines at registration, cookies for those on Monday, the parade and all the candy, “Free Bird”, “Born to Be Wild”, my sweat laden head at the beginning
of the contest, the chaos that erupts at the station, the phones going nuts ‘cuz everyone thinks that the first answer is Robert Redford, operators talking, laughing at your answers and all the mayhem that goes on for 54 hours. It’s the thrill of each year, the thrill of something that we take for granted, but new-comers to town just wonder, “What the heck is this all about”. It’s intense, it’s crazy, it’s invigorating, it’s just the best reason for people in Stevens Point to gather around the radio eating up what’s happening on the best weekend of the year, it’s Trivia like it’s played nowhere else, it’s time to play Trivia, Fast Eddie……….
